CAT Student Bursaries Announced for 2025
January 30, 2025Home » CAT Student Bursaries Announced for 2025
CAT’s Graduate School of the Environment is pleased to confirm the postgraduate bursaries available to new students wishing to fund their studies with us from September 2025.
To create a fairer more sustainable future we must continue to make education around sustainability as accessible and equitable as possible. With a diverse student body, we recognise that socioeconomic circumstances vary widely and thanks to the generosity of a number of CAT supporters, donors and trusts, we are pleased to announce ten bursaries available to new students starting their studies in 2025. Bursary applications will stay open until 11 June 2025.
From programmes in ecology to architecture, our bursaries cover a range of our postgraduate courses designed to give students the knowledge, inspiration and networks to make a real difference in their chosen fields. Addressing the climate and biodiversity crisis requires changemakers from all walks of life and postgraduate bursaries help ensure that our Masters courses, which explore a big-picture, integrated approach to sustainability are available to students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to study at CAT.
What bursaries are available?
This year there are 10 bursaries open for new students beginning their studies with us in September 2025:
- The Ethel and Gwynne Morgan Trust Bursary – worth up to £4,500
- The Llwyngwern Bursary – two bursaries worth £7,350 for Home students or £9,450 for Overseas students
- The Sir John Houghton Bursary – worth £5,500
- The Rose Jessica-Maia Bursary – worth £3,445
- Widening Participation Bursaries – five bursaries worth £1,000 each
How can bursaries support CAT students?
Offered as a deduction from tuition fees, our CAT bursaries aim to help ease the pressures that accompany financial uncertainty, providing our students with the freedom to make educational choices that align with their values. By contributing towards student tuition fees, CAT’s bursaries in the past have helped students to:
- Alleviate the pressure of the additional expenses that arise from postgraduate study
- Get further involved in projects beyond their studies
- Lessen the cost pressures of travel and accommodation to benefit from onsite learning
- Decrease the financial stress of supporting a family alongside their studies
- Facilitate a healthy balance between employment and education
- Make daily living costs more affordable
“I feel extremely fortunate to have received a bursary, allowing me the opportunity to pursue my passion for learning about sustainable solutions for climate change at the Centre for Alternative Technology. Being the recipient of the Sir John Houghton Bursary enabled the financial pressures of education to be preceded by an enthusiasm and awareness towards furthering my education, engaging with the mission of caring for our environment.” – Sonia Brookes, previous recipient of the Sir John Houghton Bursary
Our bursaries have helped countless CAT students pursue their passion for the environment. One such student is Rachel Embury, who, upon applying to the MSc in Sustainability and Adaptation in 2023, was awarded the Ethel and Gwynne bursary. The bursary is aimed at individuals who wish to apply their learning to combat the climate and biodiversity crisis in Wales. It allowed Rachel to pursue her studies alongside her work for an environmental charity focused on enhancing biodiversity in the Brecon Beacons.
How do I apply?
We value the diversity of our student population and the voices and perspectives it brings to our courses. Therefore, we aim to make the application process as simple and accessible as possible. Applications can be made through our online bursary applications form before 11 June 2025. which will be considered by our shortlisting panel which includes several CAT staff and bursary donors.
