International Students

Become part a global community made up of changemakers from around the world

Join us as an international student and become a changemaker by studying one of our postgraduate courses in sustainability from a distance.

Students join CAT courses from around the world. From Cambodia to the Cambrian coast, we have people studying with us from nearly every continent. Most international students join us via distance learning through our Virtual Learning Environments and MS Teams. We encourage international students to bring their knowledge and perspective of sustainability abroad to the course as this encourages and enriches the learning of all students at CAT.

All of our courses are also accredited by two globally recognised universities, University of East London and Liverpool John Moores University.

Student Visas

If you are an international resident there are a variety of ways to study with us at CAT. If you would normally require a student visa to study in the UK, you can study our courses via distance learning (except MArch Sustainable Architecture) or alternatively, you can choose a mixture of residential (usually under 6 months) and distance learning if you are eligible. Check the UK Government website for your eligibility to see if you require a visa to study here in the UK.

We do not currently have a licence to sponsor students who would usually require a visa, which unfortunately means we can’t enrol students from outside the UK for full-time residential study. From September 2021 new students who previously would have been considered as EEA students will now be considered as Overseas students and will not be able to take full-time residential study at CAT and will need to study via distance learning or through the mixture of residential and distance learning as above if eligible.

English as a non-native language

If you speak any other language as your first language, you may be asked to provide us with evidence of your English language proficiency. An overall IELTS level of 6.5 is required, with a minimum level of 6.0 for each component, or other proof of English language competency, e.g. a letter from your employer if English is used as their business language.

Fees

There is a separate fee structure for overseas students. From 2021 the UK government changed the fee status for EEA students, meaning that new students will now be considered as Overseas not Home. Find out more about overseas student fees on our Fees and Funding page.

Distance Learning

You will learn through our Virtual Learning Environment and MS Teams alongside a mix of UK and international students, studying with the same lecturers and tutors who teach on the residential study weeks, including CAT’s in-house teaching staff and a range of expert visiting and guest lecturers.

Modules studied at a distance are typically arranged as a sequence of teaching activities over an eight-week period. Students are able to set their own schedule around seminars and group work and watch recordings of the onsite lectures at their own pace or join in with some of the live-streamed lectures if this suits.

What our graduates say

Studying at CAT sitting thousands of miles away in Muscat... I've never been away from the tutors, and regular seminars allow me to have clarity on matters instantly. Seminars planned at different times allow me to select the time that suits me. Doing distance study helps me to continue working and studying at the same time. I would strongly recommend studying by distance at CAT.

During the on-line group tutorials, the tutors tested and broadened our understanding whilst encouraging us all to discuss and debate the issues, ask questions, voice our opinions and made sure the 'quiet ones' were involved as well. My pastoral tutors, thesis supervisor and the support staff were excellent and supported me throughout.
