Marketing and Communications Officer, Myfi Fenwick, interviews current residential Gardens volunteer Georgia Davies.

What made you want to volunteer at CAT?

I was drawn to CAT because of my love for nature and my curiosity about sustainable living. It seemed like the perfect blend of learning, community and action.

What skills have you developed while volunteering with us?

So many – from organic gardening and composting to coppicing and driving a tractor. Beyond the hands-on experience, I have also learned the value of collaboration, patience and adapting to the rhythms of nature. There is something so fulfilling about seeing the results of work done with care and intention, watching the gardens evolve throughout the seasons.

What is your most memorable moment at CAT?

One of my favourites must be working alongside an incredible group of people weaving the live willow structure in the allotment garden, laughing, learning, and feeling like we were part of something bigger than ourselves. It always comes back to that sense of community, being in a team with the same goal of working alongside nature rather than against it.

How might you go on to use the skills gained at CAT?

I see myself using these skills in so many ways, whether in community projects, my own garden, or sharing knowledge with others. These skills will now allow me to enter a job in sustainable horticulture. CAT has given me not just practical tools, but also the confidence to take what I have learned and apply it in the real world.

What will you miss most about volunteering at CAT?

More than anything, I’ll miss the sense of belonging that comes from being surrounded by people who genuinely care about the planet and each other. It is truly special to spend every day surrounded by people who become family.

Any advice to prospective volunteers?

Do it! You do not need to be an expert in gardening or working within woodlands – just bring an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a love for the outdoors. CAT is a place where you can grow in so many ways, surrounded by inspiring people who will support and encourage you. There are so many opportunities here, you just need to try things and find out where your passions lie. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after you leave.

There are many opportunities to volunteer with us at CAT. From day volunteering to our 6-month residential volunteering. To find out more get in touch with Volunteer Manager Holly Owen volunteering@cat.org.uk or visit www.cat.org.uk/volunteer
