The Graduate School of the Environment at CAT are once again able to offer the Sir John Houghton Bursary to a promising student who demonstrates that they have an excellent academic record and a passion for tackling climate change.
Applications for the bursary, worth £4,500, are open to those beginning courses at CAT in September 2020.
Sir John Houghton, former co-chair of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Scientific Assessment Working Group and former Chief Executive of the Met Office, made a generous donation in 2016 which allows CAT to provide the bursary on an annual basis.
On awarding CAT the generous donation, he said:
I have spent a lifetime studying the atmosphere and the climate and latterly have been concerned with the reality of human induced climate change. I now want to help the next generation tackle this serious problem, possibly the biggest the world faces.
Maria Cooper was awarded part of the bursary last year. Maria is currently studying on our MSc in Sustainable Food and Natural Resources. Without the bursary, Maria would have been unable to undertake her studies at CAT. She said:
The Sir John Houghton Bursary has been an incredible support for my masters’ studies at CAT. The financial support from the bursary has enabled me to study and continue my climate action work, as well as travel to CAT using lower impact but more expensive modes of transport. The studies and the bursary support me in putting my time and energy into working for a more climate conscious future.
