This suite of workshops allows pupils to gain a practical insight into the issues around the use of biomass as an energy source.
Covering the science and engineering involved, the activities can include access to CAT’s on-site woodland and biomass district heating systems.
Biomass Site Tour
Activity Overview:
Pupils are introduced to the principles and complexities of biomass as a renewable energy source. They look at the forms of wood fuel commonly used in biomass heating plants followed by a behind the scenes tour of the systems used on the CAT site. This covers the basic engineering and operation of the installations.
Key Info:
- Duration 1 hour
- Suitable for A level
- Focus on STEM subjects
- The tour involves access to the CAT site and suitable footwear and outdoor clothing is essential.
- Covers sustainable woodland management, common forms of wood fuel and the operating principles of a district biomass heating system.
- £60 per session (up to 16 pupils)
Biomass Energy Workshop
Workshop Overview:
Pupils work in groups using wood-fired storm kettles to measure the transfer of energy from burning fuel into water. By taking temperature readings at set intervals, these are then used to produce temperature/time graphs which can be used for a variety of calculations including power.
Key Info:
- Duration 1 hour
- Suitable for A level
- Focus on STEM subjects
- The activity involves working out on the CAT site and suitable footwear and outdoor clothing is essential
- Covers heat energy transfer and power calculations using a simple excel spreadsheet
- £60 per session (up to 16 pupils)
