Investment Unlocked for CAT’s Next Chapter
June 25, 2025Home » Investment Unlocked for CAT’s Next Chapter
We’re thrilled to share the exciting news that the first phase of investment for CAT’s transformational redevelopment project, Cynefin, has officially been approved.
Thanks to support from the Mid Wales Growth Deal, we’re now moving forward with detailed design and planning work that will lay the foundations for a bold new chapter at CAT. This initial funding also unlocks vital upgrades to some of our most iconic spaces, including:
- A major remodelling of the WISE (Wales Institute for Sustainable Education) building – future-proofing this award-winning space for the next generation of sustainability leaders.
- Renovation of the Quarry Cottages – enhancing our on-site accommodation to welcome more learners and visitors.
- Significant upgrades to the Strawbale Theatre – creating a more inspiring and accessible venue for talks, performances, school visits and community events.
But this is about more than just bricks and mortar. It’s about reimagining CAT as a world-class hub for sustainability education, innovation and community – rooted in the Welsh landscape and culture, and powered by regenerative systems for energy, water, waste and infrastructure.

What is Cynefin?
Cynefin (pronounced kuh-neh-vin) is a word in Cymraeg (Welsh) that speaks to our deep connection with place and belonging – and that’s exactly what this redevelopment project is about. The project enables our vision for a vibrant, inclusive and inspiring CAT that supports a just transition to a zero-carbon future from our home in the regenerated Llwyngwern quarry in mid-Wales.
Through the Cynefin project, we’re creating the spaces, networks and sharing the skills needed to tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis head-on. This first phase is a crucial step in that journey – helping us enhance learning environments, expand our capacity, and demonstrate climate leadership through our operations. The Cynefin project also reflects the Mid Wales region’s ambition to lead in green innovation. By developing a more immersive, inspiring and accessible experience for learners, tourists and changemakers, it will drive footfall and economic growth in the area, while also supporting vital work to tackle climate change.
Why Now?
The world needs bold, practical solutions to the climate emergency – and CAT has been pioneering those solutions for over 50 years. With this investment, we’re building on that legacy to reach more people, share more knowledge, and deepen our impact.
Eileen Kinsman, Co-CEO of the Centre for Alternative Technology, said: “We are delighted to receive this support through the Mid Wales Growth Deal. It brings renewed confidence in our vision and enables us to begin significant upgrades to our unique WISE building. Cynefin is about imagining a zero-carbon future and building the networks, skills and spaces to help make it happen. This is a crucial step in ensuring CAT continues to inspire, educate, and lead the way on climate solutions – regionally and beyond.”
What’s Next?
This is just the beginning. The Cynefin project will be delivered in phases, with each stage unlocking new opportunities to grow our impact. Future phases will further enhance our capacity to deliver immersive learning, support green skills development, and welcome a wider community of changemakers. CAT’s postgraduate students have already been able to learn from some of the ongoing planning and surveying work, which has provided additional opportunities alongside their Masters to get hands-on experience learning from experts.

Joint Chairs of the GMW Board, Councillor Bryan Davies, Leader of Ceredigion County Council and Councillor Jake Berriman, Leader of Powys County Council said: “This marks an important moment for Mid Wales. The Cynefin project is not only preserving a key regional asset but also enhancing our capacity to lead in low-carbon innovation, education, and sustainable tourism. We’re proud to support this first step in what promises to be an exciting journey.”
We’re incredibly grateful to the Mid Wales Growth Deal and our partners for believing in this vision. Together, we’re creating a more resilient, regenerative and hopeful future – right here in the heart of Mid Wales.
Stay tuned for updates as we bring Cynefin to life.
