Rhiannon Munro
CAT Graduate
Since completing her studies Rhiannon has been co-establishing a community climate action group, creating a Climate Café with fellow students, and completing a Higher Education Waste Regulation Placement with Natural Resources Wales.
Since completing her studies Rhiannon has been busy with variety of different projects, groups and roles! Since September 2023 she has been part of the Waste Regulatory Reform team at Natural Resources Wales as part of a Higher Education Waste Regulation Placement. Her role’s focus is to develop the regulatory approach and delivery of the new Workplace Recycling regulation in Wales and support businesses to comply with the new law.
Inspired by a lecture given by Caroline Hickman during a CAT module week on climate anxiety, Rhiannon undertook climate cafe training by the Climate Psychology Alliance which inspired her alongside fellow CAT students to create a collective called ‘Casglu Climate Café’s’. The aim at first was to facilitate Climate Café’s at CAT for the student body to help nurture emotional resilience in the face of climate change.
‘Climate Action Torfaen’ is also a community climate action group which Rhiannon co-established, which aims to build bridges for transformational change in their local area. As a group, they are helping to empower individuals and communities by sharing and building the skills and connections to respond to the climate and nature emergency. They have also built relationships with the local council to encourage the co-development of environmental policy and practice between residents and the council.
Studying at CAT empowered me to put myself out there and say yes to opportunities I otherwise would have felt unequipped for. My love of learning has only deepened, alongside my appreciation for the complexity of both the challenges and opportunities we all face today. Studying at CAT, as cheesy as it may sound, has been a transformational experience for me. It’s a truly special place and I encourage anyone to consider CAT if they are thinking about post-graduate study.
Rhiannon’s future is exciting, and she is soon to be launching Climate Action Torfaen’s first project, which will encourage local climate action and build community networks through the lens of food. ‘Casglu Climate Cafes’ have also been invited to facilitate climate cafes at Greenman Festival providing an amazing opportunity to advocate and raise awareness for wellbeing in the face of the climate and nature emergency at the event.
