CAT at COP: Activities and events

As our team from CAT arrive in Glasgow for the start of COP26, here are some of the activities and events we’re involved with over the next two weeks.
CAT is one of only a handful of organisations from Wales with official United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Observer Status. This means we can take part in discussions in both the Blue Zone and Green Zone as an Environmental NGO.
Our small team on the ground will use this opportunity to connect with people from across the world. We’ll be listening, learning, sharing knowledge and working together on solutions, whilst joining others in pushing world leaders to take bold ambitious action.
Here’s a look at some of the events we’re involved with – you can join many of them online as well as in-person in Glasgow.
Speakers in Blue Zone events
The Blue Zone is managed by the United Nations (UN) and hosts the main negotiations between world leaders from the 197 Parties to the UNFCCC.
This space also brings together observer organisations to share their stories and solutions at panel discussions, side events, exhibits, and cultural events.
CAT team members will be speaking at the following Blue Zone events:

Distributed Leadership – Working Together to Reach Net Zero
Welsh Government event, UK Presidency Pavilion, Blue Zone
Dr Anna Bullen, Innovation Lab Manager, joins the Welsh Government panel event in the UK Presidency Pavilion discussing different types of climate leadership from government to grass roots.

Paul Allen presents CAT’s Zero Carbon Britain research as part of an international panel exploring local climate solutions and renewable energy.
COP Cymru Regional Roadshow events
During COP26 the Welsh Government are organising a series of events in regions across Wales to bring people together to discuss key issues.
The four Regional Roadshow events will explore a different theme, mirroring the COP26 Presidency Programme.
CAT will host three live panel events for the Mid Wales Regional Roadshow, streaming to digital audiences across Wales on 6 November.

COP Cymru Regional Roadshow: Nature Based Solutions
Panel event hosted at CAT with virtual audience
Panels will explore nature-based solutions, resource efficiency and nature, and people, place and nature.
Panellists include Sêr Cymru Professor Richard Lucas of the Living Wales Project, in which CAT is a partner.

Addressing the climate emergency together: the importance of co-creative practices

Against the backdrop of conversations taking place at COP26, Dr Anna Bullen explores the theory and practice of co-creative processes, looking at the ways that CAT’s Zero Carbon Britain Innovation Lab uses these processes to identify key barriers and solutions for a just transition to zero carbon.

Other events and activities taking place around COP26
Outside of Glasgow and the Blue and Green Zones, organisations around the UK are hosting activities and events to add momentum and different perspectives to the global call for climate action.
1 November, 9:30am – 17:00pm
Zero Carbon Britain: Carbon Literacy for Local Authorities
Part of the Carbon Literacy Day of Action
Specifically developed for those working in local authorities, our online course covers the science of climate change, local and global impacts and how these will affect the work and duties of local authorities.
The course forms part of the Carbon Literacy Action Day, the largest ever live climate action training event on the first day of COP26. Training will take place throughout hundreds of organisations with thousands of learners completing their Carbon Literacy at the same time (17:00 GMT).

A Manifesto for Education for Environmental Sustainability: Launch Event
BERA – online event
The online launch of a ‘Manifesto for Education for Environmental Sustainability’. Co-created by young people and teachers from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the manifesto presents priorities at class, school, community and policy level.
CAT was Wales lead on workshops for this partnership project. Amanda Smith will be joining the event.

Becoming a Carbon Zero Community
Denbighshire County Council – online event
Amanda Smith is speaking as part of this online event organised by Denbighshire County Council’s Climate Change Team exploring what Welsh communities are doing and how we can all contribute to tackling climate change.

Zero Carbon Britain – mini innovation lab
Hawkwood Climate Action Lab – Online event
Dr Anna Bullen will deliver a mini innovation lab as a keynote speaker at this three-day conference, supporting participants to consider the barriers to getting to net zero within their own lives and how they might overcome these.

COP 26 Coalition People’s Summit – in person event, Glasgow
Paul Allen will join a panel discussing ways of accelerating the implementation of new technologies – including local community initiatives, with low-carbon lifestyles.

COP26 Coalition, of which CAT is a member, have organised an extensive series of in person and online events bringing together voices from around the globe on key climate change and justice issues.
