CAT are seeking a Visitor Services Assistant as the first point of contact for visitors and to assist with CAT’s accommodation, catering, retail and reception functions.

The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is an internationally renowned environmental charity, a world-leading eco centre, and one of the foremost providers of postgraduate environmental education in the UK, based near Machynlleth in Mid Wales.

CAT provides inspiration, education and training in solutions to the climate and biodiversity emergency.

Key activities include a visitor centre where people can see solutions in action, residential, in-person and online short courses and events, vocational training, and postgraduate degrees in a wide range of sustainability-related topics.

Our free Information Service provides advice for individuals and our Zero Carbon Britain team publishes research and works directly with councils, communities and other organisations to help transform complex economic, social and political systems.

Job Details

  • Ref: VSA220210
  • Salary: £8.91 per hour (Will meet new Minimum Wage in April 2022)
  • Contract type: Fixed term until November 2022
  • Responsible to: Visitor Services Manager
  • Working Days: Spread over 7 days on a rota basis
  • Location: At Company’s site in Llwyngwern, nr Machynlleth
  • Hours: Variable – 15 hrs minimum per week

  • Expected start date: As soon as possible

COVID-19 considerations:

Staff are working remotely as much as possible, subject to individual roles. Working arrangements for staff comply with all current applicable COVID-19 guidance and are updated as and when the guidance changes.

Overview of Role

To support front of house services, CAT has a mail order department, café, 2 receptions and a range of conference and educational facilities, including the award-winning WISE building which boasts a large theatre, a range of meeting rooms and a range of accommodation.

The Water Balance Railway is a popular attraction of the Eco Centre both as a means to access the higher levels of the site and also in its unique operations, which aims to provide high quality service and information to its users.

Training will be given to assist in the operation of the railway.

Main Responsibilities

The Visitor Services Assistant role will be the first point of contact for visitors and will assist with CAT’s accommodation, catering, retail and reception functions.  Administration duties will form part of these service departments
