The Centre for Alternative Technology is seeking a Sustainable Skills Learning Manager to lead on the delivery of its developing sustainable skills training programme, providing skills and knowledge to help individuals and organisations respond to the climate and biodiversity emergency. The ideal candidate will have experience in teaching and a background in the field of construction, energy or engineering.

The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is an internationally renowned environmental charity, a world-leading eco centre, and one of the foremost providers of postgraduate environmental education in the UK, based near Machynlleth in Powys, Mid Wales.

CAT provides inspiration, education and training in solutions to the climate and biodiversity emergency.

Key activities include a visitor centre where people can see solutions in action, residential short courses, vocational training and postgraduate degrees in a wide range of sustainability-related topics, with online courses and events offered alongside in-person learning.

  • Hours: Full time – 37.5 hours per week
  • Responsible to: ZCB (Zero Carbon Britain) Training Manager
  • Location: Based at Company’s site near Machynlleth, Mid Wales with the opportunity for agreement on flexible home working.
  • Working Days: Working 5 days out of 7 (predominantly Monday to Friday, but with a requirement for some weekend days and evening hours)

Main Purpose and Responsibilities

The Sustainable Skills Learning Manager will lead on the delivery of CAT’s developing sustainable skills training programme, the objective of which is to providing skills and knowledge to help individuals and organisations respond to the climate and biodiversity emergency. The post holder will oversee and deliver the programme through short courses, day and residential visits by universities and other educational groups and through online delivery where appropriate.

The skills training delivered will reflect the key themes of the Zero Carbon Britain report. The postholder will be expected to bring experience from within the construction or renewable energy sector. CAT is especially committed to developing its ability to deliver CPD and skills training in support of the vital sustainable retrofit agenda.

For this role, we are open to discussing a combination of site and home working but would expect the post holder to spend at least part of their working week on site.

Content and development

  • Responsible for the development and delivery of the CAT sustainable skills programme on site and online to the following audiences:
    • CAT Short Courses
    • University and other education groups
    • Continuing Professional Development
    • Other visiting learner groups
  • Working with the ZCB training manager, develop a sustainable construction training element within the programme.
  • Work with the ZCB Training manager to monitor, evaluate and ensure quality and consistency across the offer.
  • Develop individual course and group timetables reflecting the learning objectives for the visit, course or activity.
  • Provide line management for the short course administration and part time tutor teams.
  • Liaise with the CAT Site Engagement officer on the efficient use of the site engagement team to support onsite skills delivery activities.
  • Liaise with the CAT Hospitality Team to ensure that groups hosted by CAT receive a high level of service.
  • Liaise with the CAT Marketing and Communication team to promote the sustainable skills learning programme.
  • Contribute to the short course programme drawing on the post holders own subject specialism.
  • Ensure the efficient and effective budget management and delivery of site and online engagement.
  • Ensure that high standards are maintained in relation to safeguarding and health and safety.
  • Support the delivery of GSE module elements where required drawing on the post holders own subject specialism.
  • Ensure that requests for Welsh language tuition can be met within the team when requested.

Any other appropriate duties as defined by the line manager.
