CAT is seeking a Programme & Student Support Officer to assist in the operation and development of the academic quality and standards procedures of our Graduate School of the Environment.

The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is an internationally renowned environmental and educational charity, a world-leading eco centre, and one of the foremost providers of postgraduate environmental education in the UK, based near Machynlleth in Powys, Mid Wales.

CAT provides inspiration, education and training in solutions to the climate and biodiversity emergency.

Key activities include a visitor centre where people can see solutions in action, residential short courses, vocational training and postgraduate degrees in a wide range of sustainability-related topics, with online courses and events offered alongside in-person learning.

CAT’s award-winning WISE building is the home for our Graduate School of the Environment, which offers a variety of MSc programmes in Sustainability and an ARB-prescribed Part II Sustainable Architecture (MArch) programme. Our programmes are delivered in partnership with the University of East London (UEL) and Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU).

The Programme and Student Support team is based in the WISE building at CAT and is dedicated to guiding and supporting students from application through to graduation. Under the direction of the Head of School, the Programme and Student Support team also contributes to the operation and development of the Graduate Schools quality assurance processes.

  • Salary: £19727.57 per annum
  • Contract type: Fixed term 22 November 2021 (or asap) to 31 March 2023
  • Hours: Full time – 37.5 hours per week
  • Responsible to: Programme & Student Support Manager
  • Location: Combination of working at Company’s site in Llwyngwern, Machynlleth and remotely to coincide with Student attendance on site.
  • Working Days: Normally Monday to Friday, occasional weekends

COVID-19 Considerations:

Staff are working remotely as much as possible, subject to individual roles. Working arrangements for staff comply with all current applicable COVID-19 guidance and are updated as and when the guidance changes.

Main Purpose and Responsibilities

  1. To assist the Programme & Student Support Manager (PSSM) in delivering and developing operational and quality assurance objectives;
  2. To be responsible for specific duties as defined by the PSSM and assist colleagues with all aspects of administrative duties associated with graduate studentship;
  3. To provide cover for colleagues during periods of absence;
  4. To provide general clerical duties such as photocopying and scanning;
  5. To ensure compliance with CAT’s policies and procedure including Data Protection and Health & Safety;
  6. To undertake or assist with any other appropriate duties as defined by the PSSM.

Specific duties

  • Act in a student-facing role to provide communication between the Programme and Student Support team, academic staff and the student body via email, telephone, VoIP and face to face contacts;
  • Work with link tutors and administrators at the University of East London (UEL) and Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), to ensure that our post graduate programmes are delivered in accordance with their respective academic regulations and deadlines;
  • Attend internal and external training events as required, to maintain and develop the programme and student support service and ensure effective working relationships with our academic partners;
  • Contribute to and take minutes of student, academic and support team meetings;
  • Liaise with the Finance and Reception & Accommodation teams as required, on behalf of students and academic staff;
  • Identify and reserve suitable teaching rooms and spaces required for the effective delivery of onsite teaching and learning activities in accordance with module timetables;
  • Maintain, edit and monitor module content to the student’s online virtual learning environments (Moodle & Canvas);
  • Maintain in-house databases and other systems used to maintain student records;
  • Organise and administer the records, registration and awards functions, including transcript evaluations, student applications, admissions and certification processes in order to provide maximum service to students while ensuring efficient and effective workflow;
  • Be responsible for collecting, recording, maintaining and reporting of student records within university guidelines, e.g. grades, registration data, transcripts, mid-term verification, & quality assurance reports;
  • Maintain records in accordance with GDPR and local policies;
  • Contribute to the induction and training of new support and academic staff and ensure departmental guidance and training documentation is current and effective.
