The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is an internationally renowned environmental charity, a world-leading eco centre, and one of the foremost providers of postgraduate environmental education in the UK, based near Machynlleth in Mid Wales.

CAT provides inspiration, education and training in solutions to the climate and biodiversity emergency.

Key activities include a visitor centre where people can see solutions in action, residential, in-person and online short courses and events, vocational training, and postgraduate degrees in a wide range of sustainability-related topics.

Our free Information Service provides advice for individuals and our Zero Carbon Britain team publishes research and works directly with councils, communities and other organisations to help transform complex economic, social and political systems.

  • Location: CAT site near Machynlleth, Mid Wales
  • Hours: Variable – 16 – 32 hours minimum per week
  • Working Days: 5 days out of 7 days, including night shifts
  • Salary: £9.60 per hour/ 1 April 2023 – £10.52 per hour

Overview of Role

The role of the Caretaker Team is to ensure that CAT’s accommodation, display, teaching and conference spaces are presented to a high standard and that those using them enjoy excellent customer service and a safe stay.  The work of the Caretakers spans across CAT’s facilities which include the award-winning WISE building with 24 twin en-suite rooms the Self-Build house, Eco-Cabins and high quality conferencing facilities, all of which demonstrate sustainable building design. CAT’s customers include students, school groups, short course participants, conference and event guests, day visitors and other group bookings.

Main Responsibilities

  • To deliver a high level of customer service to users of CAT accommodation and venue hire spaces;
  • To welcome guests booking into CAT accommodation and carry out associated registration and key issuing tasks;
  • To support the Visitor Services Manager in answering enquiries as needed;
  • To provide guests with evacuation and emergency information as required by CAT’s Health and Safety Procedures;
  • Working with other members of the caretaker team, ensure accommodation, staff areas and exhibition spaces across the CAT site are cleaned to an agreed schedule and standard;
  • To service rooms in CAT accommodation including bed making, room cleaning and stocking with consumables;
  • Check laundry in and out of site;
  • To provide room set up tasks as required;
  • Working as part of a rota, provide overnight cover as required to enable out of hours emergency response for CAT guests;
  • Occasionally being available on a call-out rota;
  • Clean and monitor toilets across the site;
  • Being a fire warden with responsibility for evacuation procedures in emergencies;
  • To train in first aid and act as duty first aider as required;
  • Holding keys for WISE and other buildings on site and ensuring their security;
  • Carrying out regular safety checks;
  • Carrying out recycling duties as and when required;
  • Monitoring and reporting on stock levels of consumable items;
  • Report any defects using agreed procedures;
  • Adhere to CAT’s environmental policy regarding cleaning products;
  • Assisting with other areas of CAT’s work as needed, such as clearing tables in the restaurant, car parking duties during events and basic site maintenance work;
