A CAT Graduate, Tom now works as Design Director at EP Architecture and has a passion for regenerative architecture and deep retrofit.

Tom Barnes is Design Director at EP Architects, where he leads the practice’s work across heritage, education, community and public sector projects. His passion lies in regenerative architecture, deep retrofit and the creative reuse of existing buildings, taking a holistic approach to design that brings together environmental performance, heritage, wellbeing, biodiversity and long-term social value to create resilient places for future generations.

Tom graduated from the Centre for Alternative Technology with a Professional Diploma in Architecture, where he developed the philosophy that continues to underpin his work today. CAT’s unique blend of academic learning and hands-on, practical experience gave Tom a deeper understanding of how buildings, landscapes and communities are intrinsically connected. He combines building performance, sustainable design and heritage conservation to demonstrate that existing buildings can become catalysts for thriving communities, environmental resilience and long-term prosperity.

Alongside his professional role, Tom is committed to supporting organisations that protect both the built and natural environment. He works closely with community groups, heritage organisations and local authorities, championing collaborative approaches that bring together architecture, sustainability and social purpose. He believes the most sustainable building is often the one that already exists, and that our greatest opportunity lies in reimagining and adapting our existing places.
