Low and Zero Carbon Buildings
Join a CAT student teaching week and delve into the requirements to make new and retrofitted buildings meet Low and Zero Carbon emission status.
Through a series of lectures, discussions, and practical activities you will learn alongside our postgraduate students on our MSc courses including our Masters in Green Building.
You will experience what it might be like to study on one of our postgraduate courses at CAT and gain invaluable knowledge and skills around how energy transfers in buildings can be calculated or modelled and how this can be used to optimise design for energy efficiency.

- Includes: tuition, all materials, lunch (accommodation can be booked separately)
- Full board accommodation, when available for this course: £325 for a single person bedroom for the duration of the course (check-out is on the last day of your course). Accommodation will show, if available, once you have added the course to your booking.

Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance for joining the course at the end of the week. If attendees wish to enrol on a postgraduate course at CAT and take the module within their future course, they will be able to receive a discount on tuition costs.
Who is this course aimed at?
This week is aimed at people who wish to have a taster of studying at postgraduate level at CAT and want to gain knowledge of how we can make our buildings and homes more energy efficient.
What you will learn
Rapidly reducing the energy we use to heat homes and buildings is needed if we are to lower societal emissions fast enough to rise to the challenges of climate crisis and adapt to environmental changes.
Improving energy efficiency in new and existing buildings is a crucial part of this response. In this short course, participants are introduced to a multidisciplinary approach that can be used to appraise and help inform building design.
Topics covered includes:
- Energy and Mass flows in Buildings
- Post occupancy evaluation of building performance
- Thermal bridges
- Thermal mass in buildings
- Solar Gains
- Airtightness, ventilation and cooling
- Movement of moisture in building fabric
- Relative humidity, internal moisture control and moisture buffering
- Computer simulation of thermal and hygroscopic building performance
- Low and zero carbon buildings, including Passivhaus
- Retrofit – techniques, importance of continuity, detail
- Retrofit – consumer challenges
How will I learn
Through pre-reading and some pre-recorded introductory lectures, live in person lectures, discussions, group activities and practical activities at CAT.
This short course is part of the teaching week for the MSc module Low and Zero Carbon Buildings. Please be aware there may be some activities and content during the week only available to students, where an activity isn’t appropriate for the short course attendee, we will endeavour to arrange a replacement activity.
Meet your tutor
Module Leaders
Ivor primarily teaches on CAT’s Green Building programme where he specializes in sustainable design, building performance and all things timber. Ivor is a wood scientist and technologist. He is particularly interested in how timber and related materials can contribute to enhancing building performance and the circular economy. He is best known for his work on the design and performance of timber façades.
Anna Poston is a senior lecturer and tutor on the Green Building, SA, SEPDM and SBC Programmes. With a background in Architectural design and research, she lectures in sustainable design, environmental architecture, building performance and sustainable building materials.

Alongside the module leader and expert Graduate School staff, teaching sessions are led by a range of guest speakers and lecturers currently working in the sector and academia who join students on-site or through live streams.
