Join a CAT student teaching week and explore theories of behavioural, social and system change and how these approaches can be applied to promote a more sustainable society.
Through a series of lectures, discussions, and practical activities you will learn alongside our postgraduate students on our MSc courses including our Masters in Sustainability and Behaviour Change, and Sustainable Food and Natural Resources.
You will experience what it might be like to study on one of our postgraduate courses at CAT and gain invaluable knowledge and skills around modern communication strategies available for addressing current environmental challenges.

- Start and finish times: starts at 9am and ends at 3pm on the last day
- Fees: £700
- Includes: tuition, all materials, lunch (accommodation can be booked separately)
- Full board accommodation is available for this course: £325 for a single person bedroom. (This option will become available once you click “Available” or “Book Now” below)
- What to bring: good boots and waterproof clothing is advised

Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance for joining the course at the end of the week. If attendees wish to enrol on a postgraduate course at CAT and take the module within their future course, they will be able to receive a discount on tuition costs.
Who is this course aimed at?
This week is aimed at people who wish to have a taster of studying at postgraduate level at CAT, want to delve into the different roles and motivations of individuals, organisations, communities, governments and society in driving social change for sustainability, and explore how we make this change happen.
What you will learn:
The need to act on the climate crisis and rapidly reduce emissions has never been more urgent. This course will help participants critically analyse theories of behaviour, social and system change, examine these theories in practice, and explore their practical applications.
Topics covered include:
- Behavioural science, system and social change models in practice
- How we can evaluate the different roles and motivations of individuals, organisations, communities, Governments and society
- The role of community and participatory based approaches in behaviour change
- How we can evaluate behaviour, social and system change
How will I learn:
Through pre-reading and some pre-recorded introductory lectures, live in person lectures, discussions, group activities and practical activities at CAT.
This short course is part of the teaching week for the MSc module Theories of Social and System Change. Please be aware there may be some activities and content during the week only available to students, where an activity isn’t appropriate for the short course attendee, we will endeavour to arrange a replacement activity.
Meet your tutor:
Dr Rebecca Upton
Rebecca is a senior lecturer on the MSc Sustainability & Behaviour Change course and lectures mainly on the Theoretical Approaches to Transformational Social Change and Communicating Transformational Social Change modules.
Dr Sam Saville
Sam is an alumnus of the Graduate School who returned to CAT in 2021 as a senior lecturer. She returns from a decade of academic geography as a passionate learning facilitator with research specialisms in value systems, nature-culture relations, polar and rural regions, globalization and participative research.
Other tutors and lecturers
Alongside the module leader and expert Graduate School staff, teaching sessions are led by a range of guest speakers and lecturers currently working in the sector and academia who join students on-site or through live streams.
